The Traveling Eye

Photographs by Glen McClure

The Traveling Eye When I was much younger, I loved to watch “On the Road,” the news segment on CBS Sunday Morning hosted by Charles Kuralt. Mr. Kuralt traveled the United States, and he would explore ordinary towns and countrysides, and meet the most interesting regular folks you can imagine. The feeling of adventure he brought to his show each week, well, I guess it kinda always stuck with me. It opened up my world!

So, this Traveling Eye exhibition features some of the most recent photographs I’ve made as I traveled and explored in England, France, Ireland, Italy, and Virginia. These images reflect my love of the landscape, the sea and rivers, and the fantastic cloud formations in the sky. They also show the architecture of the region, sometimes peopled by regular folks doing regular things.

When I travel, I want to immerse myself in my surroundings. If I glimpse something interesting, I have to stop the car, RIGHT NOW, and go make a photograph. Or I’ll hear a commotion down the street and I figure something’s up and I’ll head that way to see. The key is to try to always let my traveling eyes do the work. I hope these images open up your world.
