Juneteenth – A Place of Our Own – The Story of the Maroons

June 19 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free Event held at the historic Emanuel A.M.E. Church on North Street.  Written, directed, and presented by Portsmouth’s own, History Alive.  Musical arrangments provided by Grammy -award nominated producer Mark Carman provided.

What hardships would you endure to live free…to have a place to call your own…to create a community where all are equal.  Travel deep into the Great Dismal Swamp as the performers weave a fascinating tale through monologue, vignette, and song.

A recitation by Tonya Sinclair Swindell of her poem, “A Call to the Descendants of the Maroons” completes this meaningful Commemoration of Juneteenth 2024.
