James Abbott grew up in the Tidewater area, where many of his first outdoor experiences and activities were in the marshes along the James River banks or on the trails in the mountains of Virginia. James earned a BS in Biology and Environmental Science and an MS in Environmental Science with a concentration in Education, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, which allowed him to study the food webs of the Upper Bladen River in Belize. He is a conservation biologist and environmental educator. He studied the habitats of southeastern river systems through the research of birds and currently works for the James River Association in Williamsburg.
