A Father’s Legacy

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum is proud to host Phillip Brashear, son of Navy Diver Carl Brasher, on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 1:30 PM for a presentation on the life, experiences, and achievements of his father in concert with the display “Man of Honor: The Navy’s Most Famous Diver.”

A 1980 graduate of Portsmouth’s I.C. Norcom High School, Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, and retired Chief Warrant Officer, Phillip M. Brashear is the President of the Carl Brashear Foundation. He has presented the story of his father’s life at events across the world, giving a unique insight into a man who overcame both racial and physical barriers to become the United States Navy’s first African-American Master Diver and active duty amputee. The presentation will be held within the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum at 2 High Street in Portsmouth and is open to the public. Please call 757-393-8591 for more information.
