Instrumental in America’s fight for independence, Lafayette was only 19 when he defied his king and left France to fight with the Continental Army at no pay. A celebrated hero and friend of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and other Founding Fathers, Lafayette was officially proclaimed an honorary U.S. citizen in 2002.
Learn more about the life and legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette – including his lifelong commitment to democracy, the abolition of slavery, women’s rights and more – now through April 28.
