American operatic tenor Orson Van Gay II possesses a unique and versatile voice that brings audiences to their feet with his charisma and command of the stage for a singer of his generation.
A native of Southern California, Orson is no stranger to the Hampton Roads community. He honed his vocal talents as a Vocal Performance major at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, studying under Agnes Fuller Wynne and Kerry Jennings, and later with Sondra Gelb. He was twice honored as a state and regional winner in the Mid-Atlantic National Association of Teachers Singing competition.
Orson made his debut in the title role of Bernstein’s “Candide” at A Noise Within Theatre in Pasadena. He joined the Cal Philharmonic Orchestra’s celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th Anniversary and Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” as a tenor soloist at Walt Disney Concert Hall. He made his debut as a tenor soloist with the Pacific Symphony at Segerstrom Concert Hall under the baton of Maestro Carl St. Clair. He has performed with the LA Opera in such productions as “Orpheus,” “Figaro 90210!” and “The Prospector.” He debuted with Center Stage Opera in “L’elisir d’amore.”
In addition to performing in the romantic and Germanic languages of opera, Orson has been sought after to perform in Mandarin. He debuted his role as Alfredo in Pacific Opera Project’s production of “La Traviata,” and premiered a new composition, “Golden,” by Nathan Wang based on the life of Polish composer Igancy Paderewski. He also was a tenor soloist in the 60-year commencement concert of Handel’s “Messiah” in Alabama. Orson made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2019. While staying active in community projects to showcase opera, he also is an actor who has appeared in several nationally-recognized television series, major television commercials, and Netflix variety shows.
